Here is what I enjoyed reading the most in 2024. In no particular order…
When Kindle became popular, I wasn’t a big fan. I loved the crispness of the book, held in my hand. No more. I have enjoyed many e-books since. It took me longer to give audiobooks a go. This was the year when I tried a few during my commute. To my surprise I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I still love a physical book but not wedded to the format! This year, my top 5 include an e-book and an audiobook as well.
The Penguin History of New Zealand – Michael King

Informative! I have been meaning to read this for a long time. Finally got to it. Every New Zealander should read this, especially those who weren’t born here. The late Michael King has left a remarkable legacy that will inspire generations to come. And, this illustrated edition adds a good amount of punch too. This is a top shelf item and a keeper. I don’t think this edition is in print, but you can easily get a paperback version.
Upstream – Dan Heath
A change maker’s guide! This book recommendation came in one of posts by Alicia McKay. I love her work. When she recommended this, I was on it. Filled with stories and thought-provoking ideas for creating changes that are long-lasting and systemic. It is an essential read for folks in public service. It also caters to anyone who is interested in solving problems before they happen!

Wanderers, Kings, Merchants: The Story of India Through its Languages – Peggy Mohan

Fascinating! Those who don’t know India well are surprised when they hear about the number of languages (not dialects) spoken there. I have always wondered about the evolution of Indian language. The role of Sanskrit, commonalities and subtle differences between neighbouring languages. Finally, I got answer to a question that has kept me puzzled since childhood. More on this in another post.
This is Marketing – Seth Godin (Audiobook)
Eye opener! I admire Seth Godin. He is a master. I never understood marketing. Probably that is why I never appreciated it. Over the years I have begun to understand it. His work on marketing (and now strategy) should be taught in every school and universities. In every field of study. Simply marvelous. This is a must-read (or a must-listen) for anyone, creators and consumers alike.

The Night Diary – Veera Hiranandani (Kindle)

Poignant! My 12 year old was reading this at her school. Written as a diary, set in 1947 when India and Pakistan were partitioned. Commonly referred to as ‘Partition’, was one of the most traumatizing and heartbreaking events in South Asian history. This book was a father-daughter reading time. I did annoy her with side stories of partition that I had heard from my grandparents. Loved the book, and the time we spent together!
I hope you’ll discover something new to add to your reading list!
